Christmas Around the World Unit

Last week, we started our Christmas Around the World unit. We got to visit five different countries. We visited Germany, France, Sweden, England, and Italy. We did a rotation within our pod. Each classroom was a different country. We made ornaments to represent the country, and  we ate a special snack from that country. We loved learning how people around the world celebrate Christmas. Here are are few pictures from our celebration.

Ready to travel to a country!

Using PebbleGO in the classroom!

I added the app PebbleGo to my classroom iPads and it is great! We started our spider unit and my kids have been able to do research using this app. They did  group work and found facts about spiders. They are also about to watch videos on this app. This was a lot of fun for my kiddos!

Homecoming Week 2014

This was a short week for us at school. We started the week with Fall Break. It was nice having Monday and Tuesday off :) The rest of the week we celebrated Homecoming. On Wednesday we all wore black to "Black Out" the Patriots! Thursday was Sock it to them so we wore crazy socks. On Friday we had a small parade at our school and had some football players come. The football players read to the classes. Even though it was a short week it was a cray one!! Here are some pictures from our week :)

Awesome Job!!

Hannah was the first student in the whole school to be able to say the pledge. She has already passed addition and subtraction levels on our math program called Math Facts in a Flash! She has accomplished this very quickly. I am very proud of Hannah! Way to go! I can't wait for some of my other students to be able to do this.

Let's Go Camping

This past week our Reading Story was Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night. In the story Henry goes camping with his family. On Friday we decided to go camping.  I had the students bring blankets to make tents and flashlights. I brought the stuff to make S'mores! We even had a campfire thanks to Youtube. While the students were camping they were also practicing fluency. They had a stack of books they were reading in their tents. We loved ending our Friday this way!

Back to School

It is already time to go back to school I can't believe it! I feel like summer has flown by. I did not get to enjoy my summer this year because I started Grad school. I have been working like a mad woman these past few weeks trying to get my classroom ready for my new students. Our pod has adopted an ocean theme this year. We are all loving it! In pod 2 we will be learning from under the sea. I can not wait to meet my kiddos and get the school year started. We are going to have a wonderful year!

We have orientation Monday August, 11th at 7:00 (Please do not bring children)
We have Meet and Greet Tuesday, August 12th at 9:30-10:30

Going deeper with GO Math!

This is my second year teaching math using the GO math series. I love how it challenges the kids. It has so many great partner games incorporated within the math lessons. My students always beg for a fast finisher to be the game from the math lesson that day. We don't always have time to play the game though. We just started our shapes and fraction chapter. I think this chapter has to be very hands on. We will be using our math kits and shape manipulatives a lot during this chapter. I introduced the chapter yesterday so we had plenty of time to work with our math partners. We got to identify 3D shapes and count the faces.

Circus Field Trip!!!

I have not been to the Circus in years. I was very excited when I found out that our Spring field trip would be attending the Circus. It took a lot of planning and hard work from some awesome second grade teachers to get this field trip together. My students were so excited last Friday. They had an amazing time. I found myself in tears half way through the show. I was excited some of my babies were getting to see something so wonderful. We all were amazed at the animals and performers. THANK YOU to the parents that went on this trip!! You guys helped me so much.
On Monday we did some writing activities about the Circus and had some great conversation about our trip! Here are a few snapshots from last Friday.

 We were SO excited!

Check out this Awesomeness!!

I wanted to share my Spring bulletin  board with everyone. I have a class full of readers. They love our time during the day when we just get to read. I saw this idea on pinterest and had to do it.  It was kind of like a project for them. I told them to be thinking of their FAVORITE book and why it's their FAVORITE. They got to meet with their reading partners and discuss. We worked on this project for a week. We finally got to write about our favorite book and then share. We also worked on sequencing before Spring Break. I bought Leslie Ann Rowland's comprehension sheets to help with this skill. Check out this awesomeness! Happy Monday!

Learning to measure

We are starting our measuring unit this week. The kids love using their math kits that have their rulers and color tiles in them. We use those tools for measuring. They love how hands on this Chapter is. We have gotten to work in groups and with our math partners. I will post more pictures from this unit and show you all the neat things that we are doing in room 216. Check out us using our rulers to measure objects in our classroom.
